The Mission
Serving the Community by Presenting a True Picture of Islam

The Founders
Dr. Mohammad Rashad Khalil: Dr. Mohammad Rashad Khalil was born in Egypt in 1928. He earned a doctorate degree in Arabic literature from the University of Cairo. He worked there before becoming a professor at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  Dr. Khalil moved to Houston in 1989. He worked at the Islamic Society of Greater Houston as an Imam, then as a chairman of the ISGH Ulama (Scholars) Committee. He was instrumental in the founding of Iman Academy and Darul Arqam Islamic Schools. In the mid-1990s, He served as a president of the Virginia-based Muslim American Society.

Dr. Khalil authored several books in Islamic interpretation of history and Islamic social sciences. Dr. Kahlil gave talks, presentations, and seminars in the US and around the world in many topics including Islamic Theology, Islamic Jurisprudence, and Islamic History.  Since the late 1990s, Dr. Khalil focused his efforts on establishing the Islamic Da`wah Center in downtown Houston, as an institution presenting Islam, its history, and its culture to people of other faith.
Dr. Khalil died in October 2006 after a long battle with cancer.

Dr. Jamal Badawi:  Dr. Jamal Badawi was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. He received his bachelors from Ain Shams University in Cairo. He moved to the US soon after. He enrolled in Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) where he received both his Masters and doctorate in the department of Business Administration.  Dr. Badawi is Professor of Management at St. Mary University (Halifax). He is also a cross-appointed faculty member in the Departments of Religious Studies and Management, at St. Mary University.
Currently, Dr. Badawi is the director of the Islamic Information Foundation (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada), which is a non-profit foundation seeking to promote better understanding of Islam by Muslims and non-Muslims.

Dr. Badawi's work in the area of Islamic education includes teaching courses on Islam at many educational institutions including Stanford University (California). Dr. Badawi is also a member of the Fiqh Council of North America, the Fiqh arm of the Islamic Society of North America, a member of the Consultative Council of North America, and a member of the Juristic Council of North America.  Dr. Badawi is also very active in journalism and broadcasting. He has researched, designed, and presented a 350 1/2 hour segment television series on Islam, which was shown on many TV stations in Canada, the US, and other countries. His published books include: Selected prayers, Gender Equity in Islam, Muhammad in the Bible, Status of Women in Islam, Polygamy in Islamic Law, Islam: A Brief Look, Muslim Woman's Dress According to the Qur'an and the Sunnah and Islamic Ethics.

Hakeem Olajuwon: Hakeem was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria in January 21, 1963. He was the third of six children. His father was a middle class business man who owned a cement business in Lagos. His athletic career began as a soccer goalkeeper and handball player. He attended a British style boarding school near Lagos. His basketball career started at the age of 17.  Christopher Pond, an American coaching basketball in Africa, Steered him toward the States. Two years later he enrolled at the University of Houston.  Hakeem started playing with the college team basketball to make it all the way to the NBA. In 1984, Hakeem Olajuwon was drafted to the Houston Rockets.

Honors & achievements during his 18-year career at the NBA

NBA champion (1994, '95); NBA Finals MVP (1994, '95); NBA MVP (1994); Defensive Player of Year (1993, '94); All-NBA First Team (1987, '88, '89, '93, '94, '97); All-NBA Second Team ('86, '90, '96); Third Team (1991, '95, '99); All-Defensive First Team ('87, '88, '90, '93, '94); 12-time All-Star; Olympic gold medalist (1996); One of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996).

In 1993-94 became the first player to be named NBA MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and NBA Finals MVP in the same year.
